What You Can do
- Lock all your doors and keep your windows up at all times, even while driving.
- Never leave your keys in your car when you are not in it, even if you stop to pick up your mail.
- Never leave your vehicle running unattended. Park in a well lighted and busy areas.
- Keep everything of value that you can out of sight and/or in your trunk.
- If you use the lighter receptacle for a telephone, radar unit, etc.,remember to remove the item when
leaving the vehicle and reinsert the
lighter. Thieves look for empty receptacles.
- Get a theft deterrent and always use it. Deterrent types include alarms, ignition kill switches, collars,
steering column bars, boots, etc.
Also consider locks for radio, cd player, batteries and gas tanks.
- Don't leave your registration, title, or insurance papers inside your vehicle carry copies in your
wallet and keep originals in a safe
place.
- When you park in a commercial garage, lot or valet, never leave an identification tag on your key ring and
leave only the ignition key
with the attendant.
- Park with your front wheels turned sharply to the left or right, making it difficult for a thief to tow your vehicle.
- Contact your local law enforcement agency and find out whether they offer free VIN etching or any additional programs in your area.
- Talk to your local law enforcement agency about auto theft in you area. An informed resident is a safer resident.
