THE ROLE OF CASE MANAGEMENT |

You've seen crime statistics in newspapers, magazines and on TV. Who helps determine which crime is "technically" a burglary vs. breaking and entering? Case Managers bear this responsibility. Here are a few words on that matter from a former employee and Case Manager, Bobbie Lee: |
* * * * * |
"A Case Manager plays a vital role in the function of the Police Department in that they are responsible for reviewing and evaluating every report that is written and submitted by the officers, to determine the proper classification of the crime, according to standards and guidelines of Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) in Tallahassee, Fl. |
This information is passed on to data entry clerks who enter all the pertinent data into computers for in-house and public interest. This information is also used in determining crime statistics locally and nationally." |

So, the next time you see statistics on crimes across our country or around the corner, you will know that each crime is carefully scrutinized by an experienced individual trained in the role of case management. Of course, later developments in the investigation of a crime can change the initial evaluation. For instance, during an investigation, a detective might find information that changes the original designation of an accident to that of homicide. |
