The West Palm Beach Police Department Homicide Unit was formed in June of 2006. Prior to this date, detectives assigned to the Violent Crimes Unit were responsible for investigating homicides as well as shootings, batteries/ assualts, robberies and sexual batteries. Due to the intensive nature and importance of homicide investigations, departmental administration chose to form a unit whose sole responsiblity was the investigation of homicides and suspicious deaths.
The unit is comprised of six investigators and a unit supervisor (Sergeant). Each investigation is approached as a team. When a homicide occurs, all members of the team respond to the scene and are integral parts of the investigation which follows.
To date, the unit has been extremely successful. For the the first full calendar year of the unit's existence (2007), the solution rate for all Homicides was 72%, which is a marked improvement over prior year's clearance rates.
In addition to homicide/ death investigations, unit members serve as members of the department's Critical Inicident Team. The C.I.T. investigates all police involved shootings and in custody deaths.
